Studio Roots and Basics, an Ecologically-Conscious Architectural Design firm based in Pune, which specializes in utilizing natural materials such as mud (including cob, rammed earth, CSEB, adobe, mud concrete, poured earth, and wattle and daub), stone, bamboo, timber, along with recycled and upcycled materials. They employ innovative construction techniques that align with the local context, people, and environment. With a mission to foster a lifestyle in harmony with nature, the firm seeks to promote health and tranquility through eco-friendly living. Our approach focuses on creating an ecosystem where all forms of life can coexist.
The firm has been actively designing projects with a holistic approach incorporating ecologically sensitive Master planning, building design, Rainwater harvesting, energy and Solar design (as key design priorities) and ensuring a positive but thorough climatological response keeping the carbon footprint to its least. The firm takes up Design consultancy as well as turn-key projects and has skilled and trained architects, engineers, contractors, landscape architects, Water management experts and energy-effienncy consultants. Currently we are working on projects in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu amongst other states in the country and are also working with Environmentally conscious firms in Bali in Indonesia, Kenya, Senegal, and other countries wherein we are helping clients build capacity to execute and deliver sensitive projects.

Studio Roots and Basics, founded by Ar. Rohan Nahar in 2010 is a Pune based forward-thinking architectural consultancy committed to creating a lasting, positive impact on the planet. With a focus on low-carbon, sustainable construction, the studio works on both national and international projects. As a Specialized Earth Consultant, it has contributed to transformative projects in Bali, Senegal, and Kenya, while expanding its reach across regions like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Punjab.
Driven by the belief that architecture is a powerful agent for change, the studio collaborates with governments, NGOs, institutions, and individuals to create designs that are both ecologically and culturally responsive.
About the Founder:
At its core is Ar. Rohan Nahar, a passionate architect who merges the wisdom of indigenous building techniques with modern sustainable design. As Design Principal, Rohan integrates sustainability, functionality, and aesthetics, backed by rigorous material testing and field studies.
Recognized for his innovative approach, Rohan frequently speaks at national forums about the intersection of architecture, society, and the environment. He has also contributed to academia since 2013, shaping future architects.

With over 30 years of experience in developing environment-friendly and cost-efficient construction technologies, he is a respected mentor at Studio Roots and Basics. His work includes key contributions at KSCST/ASTRA, IISc., Bangalore, and he continues to advise both state and central governments on energy-efficient building methods.
He has played a vital role in post-disaster rehabilitation projects across India and Nepal, bringing sustainable solutions to vulnerable communities. Based in Bengaluru, he also runs a fully equipped material testing laboratory, supporting research and innovation in eco-sensitive construction.
Dr. Ajit Gokhale - Water Management & Farming
Dr. Ajit S. Gokhale is the founder member of the organization- Natural Solutions, with expertise and extensive experience in natural resources conservation. His contribution in this area is remarkable for last two decades.
By contributing with his innovative research and ideas, he has worked in various areas like Sewage, Effluent Treatment, Rain Water Harvesting, Environmental Pollution Control and Groundwater and Surface Water Replenishment.
He has received several prestigious recognitions, including the Rashtriya Swayamsiddh Samman by JSPL Foundation (2019), Paryawaran Sarankshak Samman by Tarun Bharat Sangh (2020), and Rotary Vocational Excellence Awards (2002) for his work in environmental conservation and rural water availability. He also serves as State-level ‘Jalnayak’ and Trainer of Trainers for YASHADA, appointed by the Govt. of Maharashtra.
